Nuclear Power
Source- uraniam (atoms)
How is this energy converted?
Nuclear energy is converted into electricity in two ways. Either by nuclear fusion or nuclear fission. During nuclear fission, a neutron (a small particle) hits the uranium atom and splits it. This releases a huge amount of energy as heat and radiation. The energy heats up the water and turns it into steam which turns the turbines and the turbines turn the generators which provides electricity.
Nuclear atoms split --> Heats up water --> water turn into heat --> steam turns turbines --> turbines turn generaters --> electrical power is made

How is Nuclear power used today?
  • Used to power submarines
  • Used to run power plants that generate electricity
  • Used to make nuclear weapons
  • Used to desalinate seawater
  • generate heating systems

What are the advantages of nuclear energy?
  • Does not produce smoke or carbon dioxide, so it does not contribute to the greenhouse effect and global warming
  • Produces huge amounts of energy from small amounts of fuel
  • Produces small amounts of waste
  • nuclear power is reliable
  • Costs about the same as coal, it is not expensive to make

What are the disadvantages of nuclear energy?
  • Its very dangerous
  • It must be sealed up and buried for many thousands of years to allow the radioactivity to die away
  • A lot of money has to be spent on safety , a nuclear accident can be a major disaster

Is nuclear energy renewabe or non-renewable?
  • Nuclear energy is non-renewable
  • once we've dug up all the earth's uranium and used it there isn't any more
